GCSE Results Day 2026: deadlines to prepare for before 20 August

GCSE results for students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are due on Thursday 20 August 2026. Before that date, students and parents should confirm how their school will issue results, save key contacts and check the conditions attached to any sixth-form, college, apprenticeship or university offer.

AQA publishes results-day information for GCSE qualifications, while Ofqual’s 2026 guidance is intended to support schools and colleges through the exam-results cycle. Your own school or college remains the best source for the time, collection method and support available on the morning.

Get ready before results day

Keep a small results-day folder, on paper or on your phone, with your candidate number, school login details and copies of relevant offers. Check whether results will be collected in person, released through a school portal or sent by email, and ask what happens if you cannot attend.

• Save the admissions contacts for your preferred sixth form, further-education college and apprenticeship provider.
• Re-read each offer and note required subjects and grades.
• Keep identification and any enrolment documents ready.
• List one or two realistic backup courses or providers.
• Ask your school who will be available to discuss post-results options.

If a grade changes your next step

Do not assume that a missed grade automatically ends an offer. Contact the institution promptly, explain your result clearly and ask whether it can still enrol you, offer a different course or place you on a waiting list. Institutions set their own admissions and enrolment deadlines, so acting early matters.

Sixth forms and further-education colleges

A sixth form or college may ask to see the original results statement, proof of identity or evidence of a conditional offer. Some courses have subject-specific entry requirements, particularly for maths, English, science and vocational pathways. Ask for the exact decision and the deadline for accepting any alternative.

Apprenticeships and university plans

For an apprenticeship, contact the employer or training provider named in your offer. If GCSE grades affect a longer-term university route, speak to your school or college about resits, alternative qualifications and entry routes. UCAS is relevant for future higher-education applications, but it does not set GCSE enrolment decisions for schools and colleges.

Ask early about scripts and reviews of marking

If a result is unexpected, speak to your school first. Schools and colleges normally submit requests for access to scripts or reviews of marking to awarding bodies such as AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR; students usually cannot make those requests directly.

A review can result in a grade going up, down or staying the same. Ask your exams officer what evidence is available, whether a script can be seen first, what the request costs and when the institution’s internal deadline falls. Awarding-body deadlines and school cut-offs can differ, so do not wait until a place offer is about to expire.

The most useful call to make on 20 August

If your result affects a planned place, call the institution first and then update your school. Ask who is handling admissions, whether your place is secure and what document or response they need next. Write down the name of the person you spoke to, the time of the call and any deadline they give you.
