GCSE results day 2026: What pupils need before Thursday

GCSE results are due on Thursday 20 August 2026 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. With three days remaining, pupils should confirm their institution’s opening time, how results will be provided and which staff will be available if grades are missing or affect their next step.

Confirm your school or college arrangements now

Collection and online-access procedures are not necessarily identical between institutions or across the three education systems. Check messages from your school or college, then contact its exams office if anything remains unclear.

Confirm:

  • The exact opening and closing times for collecting results.
  • Whether results can also be accessed online, by email or by telephone.
  • Whether identification or written permission is needed if someone else collects them.
  • Which teachers, exams staff and careers advisers will be present.
  • The contact to use if results are missing or the online system fails.

The Joint Council for Qualifications key-dates calendar establishes the summer 2026 timetable, including the 20 August GCSE results date. Your institution remains the best source for its local collection arrangements.

Have essential details ready before Thursday

Bring any identification requested by the institution and keep your candidate details available. It can also help to have contact information for your intended sixth form, college, apprenticeship or training provider.

Write down the conditions of any offer before opening your results. If possible, arrange for a trusted adult to be available, particularly if you may need to discuss alternatives quickly.

Ask about reviews before requesting one

If a grade is unexpected, speak to a teacher or exams officer before changing your plans. They can explain whether a clerical check, access to a script or a review of marking may be appropriate under the relevant awarding organisation’s rules.

A review of marking does not guarantee a higher grade. The result may rise, remain unchanged or, where the applicable procedure allows, fall. Ask about consent, fees, deadlines and possible consequences before authorising a request.

Contact your intended education or training provider as soon as possible if an offer is affected. Ask whether it can consider the available grades, discuss another course or hold a decision while advice is obtained.

Check resit rules and impartial careers support

Do not assume that every subject must or can be retaken in the same way. Resit requirements, available assessment periods and entry arrangements can depend on the subject, awarding organisation, institution and education system. Ask the school or college which options apply to you.

Pupils in England can seek impartial guidance from the National Careers Service. Separate official careers services operate in Wales and Northern Ireland, so families should use the service appropriate to where the pupil studies.

Before Thursday, make one final check of the institution’s results-day message and the relevant awarding organisation’s published post-results rules.
