Cardiff 10K on September 6 brings widespread road closures

Thousands of runners are expected in Cardiff city centre on Sunday, September 6, for the Kidney Wales Cardiff 10K. The sporting event starts at 10am, with its race village based in the Civic Centre and a 10K route extending across central Cardiff.

The event is aimed at runners, while residents, businesses and anyone travelling through the city centre will need to account for closures beginning the previous morning. Cardiff Council’s notice does not state an entry price or current booking status; prospective participants should consult the event organiser’s website for those details.

Civic Centre closures begin on Saturday morning

Setting up the race village will require six Civic Centre roads to close from 5am on Saturday, September 5, until 6pm on Sunday, September 6. The affected roads are King Edward VII Avenue, Corbett Road, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.

This means the first restrictions will begin more than 24 hours before the race starts and remain after the scheduled 1pm end of the rolling route closures. People visiting the Civic Centre over the weekend should therefore expect disruption even when runners are not on the course.

Rolling closures will follow the 10K route

A rolling road closure will operate from 9am until 1pm on race day. The route includes North Road, the A1461, Kingsway, Duke Street, Castle Street, Boulevard de Nantes and sections of Cowbridge Road East.

Central streets affected include The Friary, Friary Gardens, Westgate Street, Wood Street, Golate, Guildhall Place, Quay Street, Central Square, Scott Road, Havelock Street and Park Street. Restrictions will also cover part of St Mary Street and High Street between Castle Street and Guildhall Place.

West of the centre, the listed roads include Tudor Street, Fitzhamon Embankment, Despenser Street, Despenser Lane, Despenser Place, Plantaganet Street, Beauchamp Street, Clare Street, Lower Cathedral Road, Brook Street, Mark Street, Green Street and Coldstream Terrace.

Further restrictions reach Neville Street, inbound Wellington Street, Cathedral Road and all side roads that exit onto Cathedral Road. Roads around Sophia Gardens and nearby residential streets are also included, along with inbound Penhill Road from the Llandaff Road and Cardiff Road junction.

A lane closure is planned on Western Avenue between Excelsior Road and the Mill Lane junction.

Managed access will remain at selected points

Access to Blackweir will be managed through Park Place and Corbett Road. Access to Queen Anne Square will be available through Colum Road and Corbett Road, with vehicles leaving via Corbett Road onto Colum Road.

The usual banned right turn from Colum Road into Corbett Road will be temporarily revoked solely to provide access to Queen Anne Square. Traffic-management stewards will control that movement.

From 9am until 6pm, access to Greyfairs Road at the Boulevard de Nantes and Park Place junction will be managed for bus movements and for residents and businesses within the area only.
