Brighton’s Queen’s Park by-election: deadlines before 24 September

Queen’s Park residents can vote in the ward’s by-election on Thursday 24 September, from 7am to 10pm. Voting is free and will take place at designated polling stations across Queen’s Park ward in Brighton, but residents must be registered by midnight on Tuesday 8 September.

The election will choose a new ward councillor following the resignation of Milla Gauge. Brighton and Hove City Council has confirmed five candidates and set separate deadlines for residents who need a postal vote, a proxy vote or free voter identification.

Five candidates will appear on the ballot

The confirmed candidates are:

• Rudi Dikty-Daudiyan — Liberal Democrats
• Steve Gladwin — Labour Party
• John Shepherd — Reform UK
• Stefan Sönke Speckesser — Conservative and Unionist Party
• Mark Strong — Green Party

The ballot is for registered voters living in Queen’s Park ward. Anyone who is not registered, or who has recently moved to a new address, must register before the 8 September deadline if they want to participate.

Voting arrangements have different September deadlines

Residents who cannot attend their polling station on election day can apply to vote by post or nominate a trusted person to vote on their behalf through a proxy vote.

These cut-offs are not interchangeable. The registration deadline comes first, followed one day later by the postal-vote and existing proxy-change deadlines. New proxy and Voter Authority Certificate applications remain open for another week.

Photo ID is required at Queen’s Park polling stations

Anyone voting in person must bring an accepted form of photo identification. A resident without valid photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate, provided Brighton and Hove City Council receives the application by 5pm on 16 September.

Voters must attend their designated polling station between 7am and 10pm on 24 September. The council notice does not provide polling-station street addresses, transport guidance or accessibility details, so residents should confirm their assigned venue before setting out.

Postal voters must submit their application by 5pm on 9 September. Those planning to appoint a proxy or obtain free voter identification have until 5pm on 16 September.
