UK weather today: No warnings, but rain is possible in the north

The Met Office lists no UK weather warnings for Wednesday 23 September 2026, but its outlook says conditions are becoming more changeable. People in parts of Scotland and northern England face the greatest chance of rain, while many southern areas may stay dry. Check your local forecast before commuting, travelling or making outdoor plans.

Where rain is possible on Wednesday

A weather front could bring heavy rain to eastern and southeastern Scotland and parts of northern and northeastern England, according to the Met Office outlook. The Met Office says there is uncertainty about the front, so heavy rain is a possibility for those areas rather than a certainty across every town or route.

Conditions will vary across the UK. Many southern areas may remain largely dry, making a national description of Wednesday as a wet day misleading. A forecast for a broad region also cannot tell you exactly when a shower will reach a particular street. If a journey crosses several areas, check the forecast along the route as well as at your destination.

The London and South East forecast gives a maximum of 24C on Wednesday. It expects sunny spells early, with cloud building later and isolated heavy showers possible in the far east. A clear and cold night is expected to follow, so the daytime high will not describe conditions for late travel or evening activities.

Why no warning does not mean no rain

The Met Office warning page lists no warnings for the UK on Wednesday. A warning is an official notice about weather judged likely to cause impacts. A forecast describes expected conditions, including rain or showers that may occur without a warning. The absence of a warning therefore does not guarantee a dry commute, and the possibility of heavy rain does not itself mean a warning is in force.

What to check before leaving

Look up the latest forecast for your postcode or destination shortly before departure, especially if you are travelling through the areas with a possible rain risk. Check the expected timing of showers and the evening temperature when choosing clothing or planning an outdoor event. For disruption advice, revisit the Met Office warning page: warning status and local forecasts can change as the weather system develops.
