Wednesfield Market’s new look begins on 18 August

Wednesfield Market traders are due to begin operating from the first four new purpose-built stalls on Tuesday 18 August. The stalls are on Wednesfield High Street in Wolverhampton and the market is open to the general public.

No admission price or booking requirement has been published. The City of Wolverhampton Council has also not specified a start time, transport arrangements or accessibility information for the first day of trading in the new stalls.

When and where traders will move into the new stalls

The first four stalls have already been installed, replacing older units described by the council as outdated. More stalls are being manufactured and are expected to arrive over the following weeks, so visitors may see the market changing in stages rather than all at once.

The move comes while major improvement works continue across Wednesfield town centre. Those works remain scheduled for completion in November.

Lighting and power will change how traders operate

Each new market stall has individual lighting and an internal power supply. The old stalls did not provide those facilities, making the replacement a practical change for traders as well as a visual update to the High Street.

Market trader Jon Paul Allen, who provides key-cutting and shoe-repair services, said the accessible power and individual lighting would help traders. He added that they were looking forward to working from stalls that were more fit for purpose.

The council says the consistent design is also intended to improve the appearance of Wednesfield Market and provide infrastructure that can support future events and activities on the High Street. Most of the funding for the stalls came from the Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund.

Wider High Street works continue until November

The market installation is one part of a broader programme covering paving, lighting, planting and seating. Plans also include improved pedestrian crossings and more attractive walking routes into the High Street from Bentley Bridge and Lichfield Road.

Access and signage from car parks are being improved, particularly through Bealeys Fold, where the work includes paving, landscaping, lighting and wayfinding. A new space for events and activities is also being created.

Councillor Qaiser Azeem, the council’s Cabinet Member for Resident Services, said the replacement stalls would support traders and improve the customer experience. Wolverhampton North MP Sureena Brackenridge said local traders had raised the need for better stalls and that the investment was intended to support existing businesses while helping attract new ones.

For residents planning a visit, the confirmed change begins on 18 August at Wednesfield High Street. Further stalls will be installed over the coming weeks, with the wider improvement scheme scheduled to finish in November.
