Read to the Beat: Warwickshire’s free challenge ends 24 August

Children and families can still join Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat for free at Warwickshire Libraries. New participants need to visit a local Warwickshire Library to register, while children who complete the challenge by 24 August will have a chance to win a book token.

Warwickshire Libraries said 2,700 children had registered and more than 200 had completed the challenge when the council published its announcement on 18 August. No advance online booking is listed for joining the reading challenge itself.

Where and how to join before 24 August

Read to the Beat is available through Warwickshire Libraries across the county rather than at one named venue. Parents and carers should take children to their local branch to sign up, collect the relevant challenge materials and begin recording their reading progress.

The confirmed practical details are:

Detail Information
Who can take part Children and families
Cost Free
Registration In person at a local Warwickshire Library
Completion deadline 24 August 2026
Completion incentive A chance to win a book token

The council announcement does not give a single start time, individual branch address, branch-specific timetable, transport information or accessibility arrangements. Families who need those details should check with the Warwickshire Library they intend to visit. Because the source does not specify how much reading is required to complete the challenge, families joining close to the deadline can ask library staff to explain the stages and rewards when registering.

What children can read for Read to the Beat

This year’s theme connects reading with music, rhythm and creativity. Children are not directed towards one genre: the council highlights picture books, adventure stories, fact books and graphic novels among the available choices.

Participants collect rewards and mark their achievements as they read throughout the summer. That flexible format allows children to select material that reflects their interests while still taking part in the shared county-wide challenge.

Councillor Mike Bannister, Warwickshire County Council’s portfolio holder for resources and internal affairs, said reading for pleasure helps build confidence, imagination and lifelong learning skills. He encouraged families to visit their local library and explore its books and activities.

Challenge registration and holiday events are separate

Warwickshire Libraries is also promoting children’s activities and events taking place across the county during the summer holidays. These sessions are separate from registration for Read to the Beat and may require their own event booking.

Families who only want to join the reading challenge should start with an in-person visit to their local Warwickshire Library. Those interested in additional holiday sessions can use the event-booking link provided through the Warwickshire County Council announcement, while keeping the 24 August completion deadline in mind.
