Free Accrington Soapbox Challenge returns on 29 August: what residents need to know

Homemade carts will race through Accrington town centre when the AmazingAccrington Soapbox Challenge returns on Saturday 29 August 2026. The free event runs from 9am to 3:30pm, starting on Little Blackburn Road and finishing on Church Street. It is aimed at the general public and families, with funfair rides and live entertainment alongside the racing.

According to details published by Visit Lancashire Blog, this year’s film theme will shape the carts and costumes. Competitors must also contend with jumps, water blasters, twists and turns before negotiating the left-hand finish on Church Street.

A new mega ramp will launch the carts

The biggest change to the course is a mega ramp at the start line, built by Taylors Scaffolding to give every cart a faster launch. Spectators can see the homemade entries before racing begins when the pits open on Church Street at 9am.

The carts will parade up Little Blackburn Road at 10am. Community groups and individual competitors begin racing at 10:15am, followed by the first business heat at 10:30am.

Among the entrants is Hyndburn Mayor Cllr Noordad Aziz, who will become the first sitting mayor to compete in the challenge. Sarah Smith, MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden, is returning for a second year with a Jurassic Park-themed cart and a bid for the Best Dressed Cart trophy.

Racing pauses while performers take over the town centre

A 90-minute break begins at 12:30pm, allowing spectators time to visit the Accrington Market cabins and the town centre’s cafés, restaurants and bars. The cabins near the finish line will remain open throughout the event.

Entertainment during the interval includes live music from James G, dance performances by the Helen Green Academy of Dance, roaming ska from Blowjangles and an appearance by a dancing Chinese lion. Funfair rides will also be available for younger visitors.

Racing resumes at 2pm with the second heat for community groups and individuals. The second business heat follows at 2:30pm, before the trophy presentations begin at 3pm.
