Lancaster’s free temporary library opens Monday

At 9:30am on Monday 14 September, Lancaster residents will regain access to a six-day library service at White Cross Business Park on Quarry Road. The temporary facility is free and open to the public while essential restoration work keeps Lancaster Central Library closed.

The replacement library is within walking distance of the central library. Lancashire County Council says it will provide books, digital access and space for children, activities and community events.

More than 2,000 books and computer access

Visitors will be able to borrow from a collection of more than 2,000 books. Computers, internet access and printing facilities will also be available, preserving several of the practical services normally offered at Lancaster Central Library.

A dedicated children’s area is included, alongside space that can host events. Baby Bounce and Rhyme sessions are already taking place at White Cross on Wednesdays and, according to the council, have been well attended.

The temporary site is intended for the general public, including regular library users, families and residents who rely on access to computers or the internet. No separate booking requirement for general entry has been stated.

Opening hours from Monday to Saturday

When the temporary library opens, the extended hours introduced at Morecambe Library during the search for alternative provision will end. Residents can still use nearby libraries in Morecambe, Bolton-le-Sands, Halton, Heysham, Carnforth and Silverdale while the central building remains unavailable.

Central library restoration continues

Lancaster Central Library has to remain closed because of the scale of the refurbishment and restoration work. The Grade II listed building was constructed on Market Square in 1932, and the current project is intended to protect it and keep it in use for years to come.

County Councillor Ella Worthington, cabinet member for Civic Pride, said the council had worked to secure an alternative place where people could borrow books, attend events and use digital services. She acknowledged that some residents depend on a city-centre location and thanked the community for its patience during the closure.

The central library is expected to welcome customers back in spring 2027.

Arrangements for groups and regular users

Community groups that previously met at Lancaster Central Library are now using The Centre at St Thomas’ Church. Groups still seeking an alternative venue can contact the council at [email protected].

Library users who signed up for updates from Lancaster Central Library will receive an email or text message about the temporary arrangements. The confirmed public-service opening is at 9:30am on 14 September at White Cross Business Park, Quarry Road, Lancaster.
