How to approach UCAS Clearing after results day

UCAS describes Clearing as the process for finding and applying to undergraduate courses that still have places. It can help applicants who missed their expected offer, received no offers, applied late or have decided to reconsider their original plans.

A practical sequence is:

• Check the status of each choice in the UCAS application.
• Search current vacancies, as availability and university deadlines can change.
• Contact universities directly and have the UCAS ID and results ready.
• Compare modules, assessment methods, placement opportunities, location and total costs.
• Secure the university’s permission or provisional offer before adding a Clearing choice.
• Add only the agreed choice through UCAS and follow the university’s instructions.

Applicants should avoid choosing solely because a place is available. A different course title may also mean different compulsory modules, professional accreditation or career routes.

A marking review is not an automatic re-mark

Students concerned about a grade should first speak to their school or college. Under the official qualification-results process, the school or college can discuss the available checks, request a review under the relevant procedure and, where grounds remain, pursue an appeal.

A review of marking checks whether the mark scheme was applied correctly; it does not guarantee that every answer will simply be marked again from scratch. A grade may rise, remain unchanged or, depending on the process, fall. Students should ask about deadlines, fees, consent requirements and whether a priority service is available when a university place depends on the outcome.

Universities should be told promptly if a review is pending, but applicants should not assume a place will be held unless the institution confirms this.

Changing university or course can affect tuition-fee details, maintenance support and payment administration. Student Finance England guidance says applicants must keep relevant application details current, including changes to their course or university.

Before accepting a new plan, check:

• whether the course change must be reported online or through another process;
• whether course length, location or living arrangements affect the assessment;
• when accommodation deposits become non-refundable;
• whether a contract can be cancelled if a place changes after a marking review;
• travel, equipment and placement costs that may not appear in headline tuition fees.
