UK Travellers to the EU: Check Your Passport and Entry Rules

UK travellers heading to the European Union should check passport validity, destination entry rules and their carrier’s instructions before setting off. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) began a phased rollout on 12 October 2025, planned to run for six months, so check the latest arrangements for your journey rather than assuming every border crossing works the same way.

Check your passport and destination rules

Before travelling, confirm that your passport meets the validity requirements for your destination and the dates of your trip. Requirements can vary, so do not rely on a general rule or an old booking email.

Check the destination’s current entry requirements on GOV.UK foreign travel advice. Look for passport rules and any other conditions that apply to your circumstances. Recheck close to departure in case guidance has changed.

Check the latest EES arrangements

The Entry/Exit System is the EU system for recording the entry and exit of non-EU nationals travelling for short stays. The European Commission says it began progressive operations on 12 October 2025, with a six-month rollout. Implementation may vary during that period, and arrangements can differ by border crossing.

UK Travellers to the EU: Check Your Passport and Entry Rules

Before travelling, check the European Commission’s EES information page and look for travel-specific instructions from the relevant airport, port or other border crossing. Do not assume that a particular process or waiting time will apply to every journey.

Follow your carrier’s instructions

Airlines, ferry operators and other carriers may give passengers specific check-in or document instructions. Check your booking details and the carrier’s latest guidance, including when to arrive and what documents to have ready. Follow any instructions for your route and allow time for the checks required at your departure point.

A useful pre-trip check is to confirm your passport, review the destination’s GOV.UK advice, check current EES arrangements for your crossing and follow your carrier’s directions. Those checks help you prepare while recognising that border procedures can change.
