UK holidaymakers: passport checks before travelling abroad

UK residents travelling overseas this weekend should check the rules for their specific destination before leaving home. There is no universal passport-validity requirement for every country, and visa or entry conditions can depend on the traveller, route and purpose of the trip.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office provides country-by-country guidance covering entry requirements, safety and security, health and other travel considerations. These pages can be revised, so travellers should check again on the day they depart rather than relying on an older screenshot, social-media post or previous journey.

Complete these checks before leaving home

  • Confirm that the name and personal details on each booking match the passport.
  • Check the passport’s expiry date, condition and any destination-specific validity requirement.
  • Read airline messages for document, schedule, baggage or airport instructions.
  • Confirm whether a visa, travel authorisation or additional document is required.
  • Review travel insurance terms, including declared medical conditions and planned activities.
  • Save essential booking and insurance details somewhere accessible if a phone loses connectivity.

Families should check every traveller’s documents separately. Children, dual nationals and people travelling on emergency or non-standard documents may face different requirements.

Passport and entry rules depend on the destination

Some destinations assess passport validity from the arrival date, while others may apply a different period or require unused passport pages. Transit points can also matter, even when a passenger does not plan to leave the airport.

Travellers should therefore avoid applying a rule remembered from another country. Open the relevant destination page, select its entry requirements section and check that the guidance applies to the passport being used and the complete itinerary.

UK holidaymakers: passport checks before travelling abroad

GOV.UK’s passport guidance provides general information for British nationals travelling abroad and directs readers towards country-specific requirements. An airline may inspect documents before boarding, but passengers remain responsible for meeting the destination’s rules.

Read destination safety and health advice as well

Document checks are only one part of the preparation. The destination page may contain information about local risks, regional restrictions, laws, medical provision, vaccinations or insurance considerations.

Pay close attention to the territorial scope of any notice. Advice affecting one border area, island or region should not automatically be treated as applying to an entire country. Equally, advice for the main destination may not cover a separate transit country.

Use these official pages before departure

Before setting off for the airport, reopen the destination page, recheck passport validity and entry documents, and review any recent message from the airline or travel provider.
