As thousands of students begin the autumn term, many are checking their bank accounts for the arrival of their first maintenance loan payment. If your funds have not yet arrived, the most common reason is that the Student Loans Company (SLC) has not yet received confirmation of your registration from your university or college.
The Payment Sequence
Your maintenance loan is not automatically triggered by the start of the academic term. The release process follows a specific order:
- Institutional Confirmation: Your university or college must confirm to the Student Loans Company that you have officially registered or are in attendance.
- Payment Release: Once the SLC receives this confirmation, they process the release of your funds.
- Bank Processing: After the payment is released, it can take up to three working days for the money to appear in your bank account.
How to Check Your Status
Do not assume your payment is guaranteed to arrive on a specific date if your registration status remains unconfirmed. You can monitor your application progress by logging into your official Student Finance England online account. Check your ‘View your payments’ section to see if your status has moved to ‘Confirmed’ or ‘Paid’.

If your status has not updated, ensure your bank details are correct within your portal. If several days have passed since you physically registered on campus and your online status still shows as pending, contact your university’s student services or finance department directly to confirm they have transmitted your data to the SLC.
Protecting Yourself from Scams
During the busy start-of-term period, be highly vigilant against fraudulent messages. Scammers often send phishing emails or texts claiming there is an issue with your student finance payment to steal your login credentials or banking details.
- Use Official Channels Only: Always log in via the official GOV.UK student finance portal. Do not click links provided in text messages or emails, even if they appear to be from a legitimate sender.
- Report Suspicious Contact: If you receive unexpected correspondence, consult the official phishing guidance on the GOV.UK website. The Student Loans Company will never ask you to provide your bank details or password via an unsolicited email or text message.
