Maldon families can try Xplorer free every Wednesday

Families and children can explore Promenade Park through the free Xplorer outdoor navigation game this summer. The programme runs from 22 July to 31 August 2026, with a council engagement stand available every Wednesday during the school holidays from 10am to 4pm.

The stand will be at Promenade Park, Park Drive, Maldon, CM9 5JQ. Entry is free, no booking is required and families can drop in to meet the team and learn how to take part.

Wednesday help at Promenade Park

The Xplorer Engagement Stand is intended for families who want an introduction before trying the activity. Visitors can ask how the game works, learn about its challenges and hear about other opportunities to become active around the district.

The practical details are:

A park walk turned into a navigation challenge

Created by British Orienteering, Xplorer introduces children and families to the basics of orienteering in an accessible game format. Participants move around the park looking for markers, then answer simple questions as they find each one.

That structure turns an ordinary park visit into a challenge involving observation, navigation and movement. It is designed to help young people explore parks and open spaces while spending time outdoors with relatives or friends.

Maldon District Council is delivering the programme through Active Maldon, its health and wellbeing initiative. The programme supports activities that help residents use local parks, community facilities and open spaces while becoming more active.

Council leader Simon Morgan described Xplorer as a way to “turn a walk into an adventure”, with children learning new skills while being active. He said keeping the activity free gives more families access to outdoor experiences during the holidays.

Riverside Park sessions are still to be dated

Xplorer is also planned for Riverside Park in Burnham, but no engagement-session dates have been confirmed there. The council says those dates will be announced through its social media channels.

Parish and town councils can also approach the council’s health and wellbeing team about Active Maldon funding to introduce Xplorer in their own communities and green spaces. Families wanting to start in Maldon can visit the Promenade Park stand on a Wednesday between 10am and 4pm or follow the council’s channels for the forthcoming Riverside Park schedule.
