Local writers are invited to showcase their creative talents in a new short story competition hosted by the Bracknell Forest Library Service. The contest, themed “Moments that matter: a Bracknell Forest story,” encourages residents to capture narratives inspired by the people, places, and landscapes of the borough. The initiative serves as a lead-up to the upcoming Bracknell festival of reading.

Competition theme and eligibility
Participants are tasked with writing a short story of no more than 500 words. The narrative should focus on a moment that left a lasting impression—whether humorous, mysterious, dramatic, or magical. The competition is open to all residents of Bracknell Forest aged 16 and above.

To ensure fairness, all entries must be the original work of the entrant. Collaborative entries are not permitted, and the use of generative AI tools to create the story is strictly prohibited. Only one entry per person is allowed; if multiple submissions are received, only the first will be considered for judging.

Submission and judging process
Entries must be submitted via email to [email protected] by 11:59pm on Sunday, 25 October 2026. Submissions should be sent in Microsoft Word or PDF format with the subject line “Short story competition.” When emailing, entrants must include their full name, home address, telephone number, and email address.

Submissions will first be reviewed by library staff and members of local book groups to create a shortlist. A guest judge, the Mayor of the Borough of Bracknell Forest, Councillor Peter Frewer, will then select the final winners. Judging will focus on creativity, originality, plot, and character development.
Prizes and presentation ceremony
Successful entrants will be notified by 9 November, and the winners will be announced via social media on 13 November. The prize structure is as follows:
- First prize: £50 book voucher
- Runners-up: Two prizes of £25 book vouchers each
Beyond the prizes, 10 shortlisted stories will be displayed at Bracknell Library as part of the festival of reading. The official prize presentation ceremony will take place at Bracknell Library on Saturday, 14 November 2026. Please note that while winners will be contacted, the library will not be notifying unsuccessful entrants following the shortlisting process. Full terms and conditions are available through the Bracknell Forest Library Service website.
