Bonfire Night 2026: Check Local Firework and Travel Rules

Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, falls on Thursday 5 November 2026. If you plan to attend a display in England, check your local council’s event information and your transport operator’s latest updates before setting off: event arrangements, restrictions and travel changes can vary by area.

Find a local display and check restrictions

Start with your local council’s website or event listings to see whether a public display is planned, where it will take place and whether entry arrangements or local restrictions apply. Follow the council’s latest notices, as details may differ between neighbouring areas.

Do not assume fireworks are permitted everywhere or that every event is open to the public. Check the relevant council information for rules that apply to your location, and follow instructions from event organisers and stewards.

Watch organised fireworks safely

Choose the designated public viewing area and keep behind any barriers. Follow stewards’ directions, allow space around the launch area and never enter a restricted zone to improve your view. Keep children close and agree on a meeting point in case your group gets separated.

If you are using or handling fireworks, check the current national guidance on fireworks and the law and any local restrictions. Do not bring fireworks to an organised event unless its organisers expressly allow them.

Check roads and public transport before travelling

Road closures, diversions and service changes depend on the location and event. Before leaving, check your council’s traffic or event notices and the website or travel updates from the public transport operator you plan to use. Recheck close to your journey, particularly if you are travelling during the evening peak.

Plan how you will get home as well as how you will arrive. Allow extra time for crowds, temporary stops or changed routes, and identify an alternative journey in case your usual service is disrupted. For outdoor events, check the Met Office forecast for local conditions and dress for a November evening.

The most useful final check is the latest notice for your specific event and journey: confirm the venue, any restrictions, road arrangements and service status before setting off on 5 November.
