Avanti West Coast to enter public ownership on 7 March 2027

What changes on 7 March 2027

The Department for Transport says it will take control of Avanti West Coast services from 7 March 2027. That is the announced ownership transfer date, not the date on which the other proposed improvements are due to be finished.

Avanti runs intercity services from London Euston to destinations including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and North Wales, according to IanVisits. Passengers across those routes may therefore see the ownership change, but the announcement does not establish that a particular journey will become faster or more reliable on transfer day.

December timetable changes come first

The government says timetable amendments are planned to begin in December 2026, before the ownership transfer. Passengers planning trips around that period should watch for the published timetable details and check the times for their specific trains when booking or travelling.

The Department for Transport also announced an extra £10 million for power and signalling maintenance by the end of 2027 and £50 million for London Euston over three years. These are spending plans with different timeframes. They should not be read as completed repairs or a promise that disruption will end by March.

What passengers should check for journeys now

The March 2027 transfer does not replace the need to check today’s service information. Before setting out, look up your train’s current departure time and any disruption notice for the route you will use, particularly if you are connecting at London Euston or travelling through Manchester.
