A862 reopens after rider dies in crash near Ardullie

By AtheneNet News Desk | Published 18 August 2026

The A862 near Ardullie has reopened following a collision that killed a 59-year-old motorcyclist on Monday afternoon. Police Scotland is asking witnesses and drivers with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.

Officers received a report of the crash at about 4.05pm on 17 August. It involved a BMW GS1250 motorcycle and a silver Volkswagen Passat.

Emergency services attended, but the motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Police reported no other injuries and did not identify the man in the public appeal.

A862 reopened after scene enquiries

The A862 was closed while officers carried out enquiries at the collision scene. Police Scotland said the road reopened at around 9.50pm on Monday.

The reopening ended the immediate traffic restriction linked to the initial emergency response and scene examination. No further closure was announced in the information released by police.

The investigation itself has not ended. Officers said their enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing and did not state what caused the collision. That distinction matters for road users: the route is open, but police are still seeking evidence.

The confirmed timeline is limited to the report at about 4.05pm, the emergency response and scene enquiries, and the reopening at around 9.50pm. Police have not provided further details about the sequence of events before the collision.

Witnesses and dashcam footage sought

Sergeant Neil MacDonald said officers’ thoughts were with the family and friends of the man who died. He appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw either vehicle beforehand to contact police.

The appeal therefore extends beyond people who saw the moment of the crash. Anyone who noticed the BMW GS1250 motorcycle or the silver Volkswagen Passat before the collision may have information relevant to the enquiries.

Police are also asking for dashcam footage that could assist. Drivers who travelled on the A862 near Ardullie around the reported time may hold useful footage even if they did not directly witness the collision.

Information should quote reference 2129

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland on 101 and quote reference 2129 of 17 August 2026. Quoting the reference will allow the information to be linked to the correct investigation.

Sergeant MacDonald specifically asked anyone with dashcam footage that could assist to get in touch. The request covers footage of the vehicles before the collision as well as any recording of the incident itself.

Police have not announced a cause in the released appeal. Their confirmed position is that the road reopened at about 9.50pm while enquiries and the request for witnesses remain active.
